Wear OS 5: Everything to know about the wearable operating system
Malcolm Bryant – As with all major Android version updates, this comes with some pluses and minuses. With WearOS, Google makes some decisions that are especially frustrating. For example, WearOS 5 will force apps that are running quite happily in the foreground in ambient/low-power mode, into the background such that the watch face is displayed after a short period. Which means that long-running apps (think run/walk tracking apps) have to keep the display alive, thereby using much more power than before. Totally bananas. More seriously, the decision to abandon support for older-style ‘coded’ watchfaces means that people who currently monitor their blood glucose levels from their watch face can no longer do so with WearOS 5. As you can imagine, that’s pushing some diabetics away from WearOS watches and towards the Apple watch.
