New Bites! The Last of Us, Dodos and Crocodiles

Season 3 of The Last of Us is beginning to take shape with the addition of several key characters drawn from The Last of Us Part II. Michelle Mao and Kyriana Kratter have been cast as Yara and Lev, siblings who cross paths with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) while fleeing the Seraphites. The pair are branded apostates after Lev, a transgender boy, refuses to comply with the group’s strict customs, setting their story on a dangerous collision course with the wider conflict.

The new season will also expand Abby’s backstory, with Patrick Wilson joining the cast as her father, Jerry, the Firefly doctor killed by Joel (Pedro Pascal) when he forcibly rescued Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from the hospital. Jason Ritter has also been cast as Hanley, a soldier within the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), the same faction Abby belongs to. Notably, Ritter’s wife, Melanie Lynskey, previously appeared in the first season as Kathleen Coghlan, the formidable leader of a revolutionary group in Kansas City.

Glen Powell and his Barnstorm production banner are teaming up with Dan Cohen to produce the upcoming crocodile horror-thriller, The Death Roll. Set up at Lionsgate and penned by the writing duo Kas Graham and Rebecca Pollock, the film follows a couple whose idyllic dream vacation transforms into a fight for survival when they are hunted by a massive, 15-foot saltwater crocodile.

Jason Bateman is set to return to the director’s chair for the upcoming Netflix film The Cackling of the Dodos. The dark comedy stars Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell, and centres on George, a farmer whose life takes a bizarre turn after he discovers a dead body in his grain silo, only to be pulled into an increasingly chaotic cover-up orchestrated by his boss. Bateman continues his great creative relationship with Netflix, having previously collaborated with the streamer on projects such as Ozark and Black Rabbit. With its offbeat premise and seasoned cast, The Cackling of the Dodos looks like it could deliver a mix of dark humour and escalating tension.
