Beware the Bioloigical Battle in ‘The Bunker’

It’s been a long road from the Covid lockdown to the silver screen, but Electric Entertainment has finally pulled back the curtain. After years of post-production and a positive festival run, the official trailer for the indie sci-fi thriller The Bunker has landed.

The backstory of The Bunker is almost as dramatic as its plot. Inspired by the global COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020, the film went into principal photography in Los Angeles back in May 2021. After simmering in development and making its world premiere at FrightFest in 2024, it is finally ready for a wide release in 2026.

The setup is classic sci-fi, but with a bio-warfare twist. When mysterious alien crafts appear in Earth’s atmosphere, the government doesn’t just send in the jets, they send in the scientists. Chelsea Edmundson stars as Dr. Michelle Riley, a micropathogen specialist who is sealed deep within an underground facility. Dr Riley must engineer a biological weapon capable of taking down the extraterrestrial invaders before humanity is wiped out. As the trailer suggests, the “big secrets” inside the bunker might be just as dangerous as the ships in the sky. It’s a pressure-cooker environment where technology, paranoia, and survival instincts collide.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble of genre veterans that elevates it above your standard indie fare. Chelsea Edmundson (known for Army of the Dead) take the lead as Dr. Michelle Riley, and she is backed by a heavy-hitting supporting cast. Horror icon Tobin Bell of the SAW franchise appears in a mysterious role, alongside Sniper series lead Chad Michael Collins. Rounding out the cast are versatile performers like Christopher Matthew Cook, Cullen Douglas, Debbie Fan, Sharif Ibrahim, and most notably, the late Tony Todd. In one of his final screen performances, the Candyman legend brings his unmistakable authority to the role of Frank Lawrence, a high-ranking army commander for the White House.

A Note of Remembrance. Seeing Tony Todd portray a military leader in this setting adds a layer of gravitas, and a bit of melancholy, to the viewing experience. His presence alone makes this a must-watch for genre enthusiasts.

The Bunker is directed by indie genre filmmaker Brian Hanson, director of the film The Black String and eps of the horror series Night Visions previously. The screenplay is written by Charles L. Bunce and Brian Hanson. Produced by Charles L. Bunce, Kayli Fortun, Brian Hanson, Aaron B. Koontz, & Kelby Thwaits.

While some might worry it leans too close to “budget blockbuster” territory, the indie charm and the focus on a single-location psychological thriller could give it the edge it needs to stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s a generic alien romp or a smart, tight thriller remains to be seen. If you love movies like 10 Cloverfield Lane mixed with the biological dread of The Andromeda Strain, this should be on your 2026 watchlist.
