Twilight of the Dead: Romero’s Final Chapter Is Finally Coming
There was a time when Twilight of the Dead felt like one of those great horror projects that might never actually happen. George A. Romero died in 2017 before he could bring his final Dead movie to the screen, but now, almost a decade later, the project has finally become a reality. Filming wrapped in Kentucky in September, and the first reaction from loyal Romero and zombie movie fans has been a mixture of genuine excitement, curiosity and nervousness.
And a new poster certainly hasn’t hurt. anything. It looks like something that could have escaped from the golden age of zombie cinema and landed straight onto a VHS rental shelf. Twilight of the Dead was conceived by Romero with Paolo Zelati as the concluding chapter of the original Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead continuity. The screenplay was subsequently developed by Zelati, Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas from Romero’s story, with Romero’s estate supporting the project.
Perhaps the biggest reason for optimism among hardcore fans is Greg Nicotero. A legendary effects artist who began his career working on Day of the Dead, before becoming one of the defining creative forces behind The Walking Dead. Nicotero is handling the special makeup effects here, giving Twilight a the practical-effects connection that helped Romero’s original movies stand out. The cast looks solid, led by Kate Beckinsale and Betty Gabriel, with Abigail London and John D. Hickman also among the principal cast, while Doron and Yoav Paz are directing.

There is still some understandable caution among Romero purists. This isn’t literally a movie directed by George A. Romero, and some fans are uncomfortable with the marketing description of it as “Romero’s final zombie movie” when he died before production. But that hasn’t stopped the anticipation. For many fans, the prospect of finally seeing Romero’s intended final chapter, particularly one returning to the original series timeline and exploring an evolving undead threat, is simply too tempting to resist. After years of wondering whether Twilight of the Dead would ever exist at all, the dead are finally rising again.
The plot is being kept relatively secret, but the basic premise is considerably more intriguing than the rather generic descriptions initially suggested. Twilight of the Dead takes place on a devastated Earth where humanity is close to extinction. The story follows a couple of survivors, woman and a child, who land on a island that has been reclaimed by nature and overrun by the dead. Unfortunately, the island isn’t the sanctuary they were hoping for. They find themselves caught in the middle of a violent conflict involving a different type of “evolved” undead, suggesting that Romero’s long-running idea of zombies becoming more than just mindless monsters is once again going to be central to the story.
Romero’s Dead movies were never simply about zombies. The zombies were the mechanism through which Romero examined humanity itself, racism, consumerism, militarism, class, social division and ouruncanny ability to destroy ourselves.
There isn’t a release date yet, but with production now complete, Twilight of the Dead has moved from tantalising possibility to an actual finished movie. And judging by the reaction from Romero fans, that’s enough to get the undead stumbling towards the cinema once again.
