The Run Trailer Teases a Brutal Post-Apocalyptic Chase for Survival
Rialto Distribution in New Zealand has unveiled the first official trailer for The Run, an indie post-apocalyptic thriller from filmmaker Stephen de Villiers. The film, which premiered at the 2025 Adelaide Film Festival, is set in a near-future world devastated by plague, where societal collapse has given way to chaos and survival is all that matters. Against this bleak backdrop, a hardened smuggler is tasked with completing a dangerous delivery while protecting a runaway teenager and her baby from violent pursuers. Shot on location in South Africa, the film leans heavily into its harsh, unforgiving environments to fuel a tense, high-stakes narrative. The cast includes Callan Mulvey, Charlotte Maggi, Felix Cameron, Taylor Wiese, Tim Phillipps, and Joe Romeo.
The story centers on Mac, a courier forced into risky runs for a mysterious employer, and Aliah, a young woman believed to be the last mother in a world where human reproduction has stopped. As they form an uneasy alliance, the pair must evade relentless enemies while searching for sanctuary in a lawless landscape. Written and directed by de Villiers, whose previous work includes Before the Rain, The Burnt Half, and the series Bloom, The Run blends dystopian survival drama with chase-driven intensity. Set for release in New Zealand cinemas on May 14, 2026, the film currently has no confirmed international rollout. Early impressions suggest a familiar mix of Children of Men–esq despair and Mad Max grit, making it intriguing, if not entirely easy to judge just yet.
