The first Day of the Dead 4K UHD is almost here

A 4K UHD from Cinestrange-Extreme has recently been announced for the 20th March and the listings are live on their website alongside a number of other German media retailers.

For over a decade, the primary issue with a 4K release of Day of the Dead was that the Original Camera Negative (OCN) was missing. Because the negative couldn’t be found, boutique labels (like Shout/Scream Factory and Second Sight) were hesitant to release a 4K because they didn’t want to just upscale the old 2K master.

In mid-2025, Scream Factory announced they had finally located the original film elements (the interpositive), allowing for a true 4K restoration that is only now becoming available (late 2025/early 2026).

This is something of a controversial German 4K Release. Before the official 2025 Scream Factory 4K, a German label called Cinestrange Extreme released a 4K UHD. This release has met with significant criticism. It was widely reported that this was not a new 4K scan of the negative, but rather an upscale or a scan of a lower-quality print.

You can find their post on X @CS__Extreme in which they detail their Day ofnthe Dead 4K 3 Disc Mediabook selection comprising of a UHD and 2 Bluray Discs
