Tech Addicts 2025 – Keep your EV

Gareth and Ted from get nostalgic and novel to the cutting-edge and practical. There’s a focus on unique hardware, including the launch of the world’s first ceramic mechanical PC keyboard, the introduction of a new BOOX Palma 2 Pro color E Ink e-reader with 5G capabilities, and a $6,000 solar-powered, wind-resistant inflatable camping tent. They also explore future tech with a hands-on look at the Samsung Galaxy XR glasses (and a tease of Android XR), a dive into the controversial use of AI by Channel 4 for a presenter, and the revival of classic computing with an Amiga 1200 pre-order announcement. Finally, Ted discusses software and workflow improvements, specifically praising the changes and benefits of using the Google Keep Chrome Extension for note-taking, alongside Gareth’s love for Immich.

Feedback, Fallout and Contributions

Kurt Kaufman on My Car is Bricked
Cars, especially EVs, have become so dependent on computers and associated software that we have to wonder whether they will remain drivable for a period of time comparable to traditional cars.

Ted My local motorbike shop wouldn’t service my (previous, Chinese) scooter because they didn’t have “a compatible machine”. I said that it was a 4-stroke engine – you just need to do a basic service, but they wouldn’t touch it. My dad served his apprenticeship on the Morris Minor in 1958 and he’s not lifted the bonnet on a car now for decades, decrying the same. He gave up when window-winder handles did!

Ed Hause On one hand, this sounds like EV-whining, pining for the mechanical days when 30mpg was ‘good enough’. But on the other, I do think that car companies have been on the verge of being too smartphone-like about everything. My old Volvo V40 and the current Nissan Leaf have one thing in common – a good balance of modern tech and old fashioned buttons and levers. If it weren’t for the stupid tiny battery I’d love a Dacia Spring with the most basic of setups and just have things be as simple and reliable as possible. My next best option is the Hyundai Inster with its very practical setup and Hyundai/Kia being very good at getting the basics right.
