Get ready for gorram wacky Firefly fun!
The “Browncoats” finally have something to celebrate. During a live taping of his Once We Were Spacemen podcast at Awesome Con, Nathan Fillion announced that an animated Firefly series is officially in advanced development. Produced via Fillion’s banner, Collision33, in partnership with 20th Television Animation, the project boasts the return of the original ensemble cast, including Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, and Morena Baccarin. Notably, the series will be helmed by showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters, while original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.

The new series is strategically set in the timeline between the 2002 show and the 2005 film Serenity, allowing the writers to expand the lore without disrupting established continuity. To bring the “Verse” to life, the production has partnered with ShadowMachine, the award-winning animation studio behind Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. With a script already completed and concept art finalised, the package is expected to be shopped to major streaming platforms and networks in the coming weeks.
Fillion, who has seen his production company grow rapidly since its 2024 launch, credited the show’s enduring 25-year legacy to the fans. “The return of Firefly is something the fans want,” Fillion told Deadline. “More importantly, it’s something they deserve.” The news follows a massive viral marketing campaign and serves as a bright spot for fans of the franchise, especially following the recent news that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot would not be moving forward at Hulu.
