All aboard Martin Scorsese’s ‘What Happens at Night’

Welker White is the latest addition to the intriguing ensemble of Martin Scorsese’s upcoming project What Happens at Night, further strengthening a cast that already boasts Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in the lead roles. The supporting lineup is equally impressive, featuring Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, and Jared Harris, suggesting a film stacked with heavyweight talent. Scorsese directs from a screenplay by Patrick Marber, adapting Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name.

Described as a haunting blend of psychological horror and mystery, What Happens at Night has already drawn comparisons to The Shining and Twin Peaks.

The story follows a married American couple who travel to a remote, snowbound European town to adopt a baby, only to find themselves staying in a vast, eerily quiet hotel populated by an unsettling array of characters. From a flamboyant chanteuse to a morally corrupt businessman and a mysterious faith healer. As reality begins to blur in this frozen, dreamlike setting, the couple’s sense of identity and their relationship itself start to unravel, raising unsettling questions about who they really are.

Backed by Apple Studios and Studiocanal, the film is being produced under Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions banner, with DiCaprio and Lawrence also serving as producers alongside Daniel Lupi.
