The Drift – New Arctic Thriller looks cool!
Hold onto your mittens, folks, because Capelight Pictures just dropped the first trailer for The Drift.
Directed by Finnish filmmaker Taavi Vartia, this survival thriller joins the ranks of the “trapped in one spot” subgenre that Hollywood (and now Finland) seems to enjoy. But forget being stuck in a phone booth or a coffin, this time, we’re skating on thin ice. Literally.
The film stars Thea Sofie Loch Næss as Emily, a professional ice skating star who finds herself in a bit of a flurry of trouble. After getting stranded on an ice floe, you know, just a casual chunk of frozen water drifting in the Arctic, realising she’s headed south.
As the ice starts to melt, Emily has to use all her skills to survive without having a meltdown. I’m assuming those skills include some brrr-illiant triple axels and a lot of frantic shivering. It’s being marketed as a “survival drama with heart,” but let’s be real: it sounds like a high-stakes version of Disney on Ice where the rink is actively trying to murder you.
Despite the chilling premise and the fact that we’ve seen plenty of “stuck-in-a-box” (or stuck-on-a-cube) thrillers lately, The Drift still looks like it’s worth a watch. Between the breathtaking Arctic beauty and the presence of Nikos Koukas, there’s enough here to keep us from feeling totally frostbitten.

It might not be the most realistic survival flick ever made, but hey, if you’re looking for a movie that really breaks the ice, this could be the one. Are you ready to drift away with Emily, or does this premise leave you feeling a bit lukewarm?
Look for The Drift (also known as Ice Staker in some regions) on direct-to-VOD in the US starting on February 27th, 2026.
