Hi, Mom! (1970)

Back before DeNiro became Scorsese’s goto, he was Brian De Palma’s goto making three films together as the 60’s rounded out. The third film Hi, Mom! (1970) was a radical, experimental dark comedy directed by De Palma and starring a young Robert De Niro and Gerrit Graham. This is a sequel to De Palma’s 1968 film Greetings, also starring De Niro and Graham, and serves as a sharp, often abrasive satire of late-60s counterculture, racial tension, and urban voyeurism.

Hi Mom sees Jon Rubin (De Niro), a Vietnam veteran who returns to New York City with dreams of becoming a filmmaker, specifically a pornographer. He attempts to produce a voyeuristic film for a sleazy producer by seducing a neighbor, Judy (Jennifer Salt), while secretly recording her. After his filmmaking career fails to take off, Jon becomes involved with a militant Black theater troupe. Jon descends into radicalism, eventually becoming an urban guerrilla and bombing his own apartment building.

Radiance have announced Hi Mom! (1970) as one of their May releases. For those who love Taxi Driver, Hi Mom almost serves as something of a precrusor, you can see the DNA of Travis Bickle in Jon Rubin.
